2011 ISACS – Detroit

I am a middle school teacher at University School of Milwaukee. I teach 6th grade world history and a International Relations course to 8th graders. Having experience in both public and private schools as well as having a experiences teaching in elementary, middle and high schools has helped me develop my classroom. I’m a  avid user of technology, taking advantage of many web tools to motivate and energize both my lessons and my students. Using games at school is only one of the many things I try to do to keep learning fresh and engaging for my students.

Gaming in school was something that started off slow for me. It all began when a friend of mine bought the game Settlers of Catan and had us over to his house. While playing this highly interactive game that was very engaging I realized that my students would love this game. I decided the next day to go to my friendly local game store and pick it up. Tried it out on some of my students as a recess reward game for their hard work. It was a hit! Soon after I started to develop an after school activity called Historical Game club for students to learn more of these great games.

Here is the handout that I gave during the presentation. Sorry if I ran out.
